Feeling Good About Your Body
It's important to feel good about the way you look. When considering the tummy area, many work hard to stay in shape, remain athletic and feel good about the clothes they wear every day. Putting forth this effort requires discipline and consistent execution, expecting to be rewarded for the effort they put in. At the same time, whether due to age, genetics, after-childbirth effects, or the results from another procedure, sometimes it can seem like there is no way to reverse or control on your own the increased volume. Sagging skin, excess skin, or loss of skin tone can all be contributing factors.
The Tummy Tuck
A great and safe way to treat that area of unwanted fat is with a tummy tuck. Dr. Bonnor will make an incision below the bikini line. Next, the excess fat is removed with liposuction, the abdominal muscles are tightened if needed, and the remaining skin is repositioned (including the belly button, if and where needed).
The standard incision for the tummy tuck procedure travels across the stomach horizontally from hip to hip, located just beneath the underwear or bathing suit line. In some cases from time to time, it may be best for patients to have a small inverted "T" incision that extends vertically up the center of the stomach.
It is important to note that the tummy tuck procedure is NOT a weight loss surgery focused on minimizing fat. This is a procedure that accompanies the result of your weight loss journey by eating healthy, getting proper exercise, and losing weight naturally.
Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which is Right for You?
Both are wonderful procedures that are great for slimming the body but each has its own distinct purpose. Liposuction is ideal for those who don't have excess skin or loose abdominal muscle but have what is often referred to as "bulges", which are basically fat that is stockpiled in central areas. This procedure is less invasive than a tummy tuck and can be used to target various areas on the body with localized fat tissue such as the arms, legs, and chin. If your skin is tight & firm but you are battling excess fat, then a liposuction procedure is for you. The tummy tuck procedure is specific to the excess skin on the abdomen area for those who have fairly weak abdominal muscles. If the central issue that you are experiencing is loose skin or stretched muscle (not excess fat), a tummy tuck procedure with Dr.Bonner will give you the best results.
Benefits of Tummy Tuck Surgery
Whether you are hoping to get your pre-baby body back or you've been shedding pound after pound and can't wait to reap the benefits, tummy tuck aids in more places than what meets the eye. A few of the medical benefits of tummy tuck surgery include:
- Better Posture: Extreme weight loss and multiple pregnancies often result in distended stomach muscles which no amount of exercise or diet will help. A tummy tuck surgically tightens weak muscles while also removing excess fat and skin, resulting in a flatter abdomen. Tighter stomach muscles can improve an individual's posture due to the fact that their tighter abdominal muscles are better able to support their spine. This additional support and better posture may help relieve some types of back pain.
- Reduction in Urinary Incontinence: Many new moms report that they develop what is known as Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) after giving birth vaginally. SUI is a bladder control issue, with urinary leakage brought on when the woman exercises, sneezes, coughs or even laughs. Most cases of SUI are treated non-surgically, but several studies suggest that a tummy tuck can help with SUI for those women who need a more invasive treatment.
- Correcting Umbilical / Ventral Hernias: Both men and women who lose a great deal of weight, who undergo a Caesarean section (women only) or an appendectomy may experience a ventral hernia, which occurs when abdominal tissue or an intestine breaks through the abdominal wall, forming a sack or pocket. These types of hernias often recur after traditional hernia repair, and so a surgeon may decide to perform an abdominoplasty while performing hernia repair surgery to strengthen the abdominal wall.
The Texas Surgical Arts Difference
Our surgeons use refined techniques to create significantly smaller scars compared to the traditional Tummy Tuck. They also encourage liposculpture with the Vaser technolgy to give patients the best results possible. When and where effective, they will perform liposuction along with the Tummy Tuck in order to more precisely sculpt and contour the waist, lower back, and to flatten the abdomen. Most surgeons do not actually combine abdominal liposuction with a Tummy Tuck, but we recommend it because it results in a more contoured abdomen.
